Total Carbohydrate
Carbohydrates, Sugars & Fiber
Total Carbohydrate is an aggregate quantity whose included components depend on the analytical method or labelling system. It is not always equivalent to total sugars or the carbohydrate rapidly available to fuel activity.
Label numbers depend on the definition used. US total carbohydrate includes fibre, whereas the EU carbohydrate declaration excludes fibre and includes polyols. Subtracting fibre again from every number labelled carbohydrate is therefore not a valid universal method. The label's framework must be identified before interpreting the total.
Estimating exercise fuel requires the amount of carbohydrate contributing to readily available energy, rather than a product's marketing name. Terms such as 'net carbs' have no single worldwide definition. Fibre and all polyols cannot be counted gram for gram as equivalent to glucose for fuelling activity.
When comparing sport bars from different markets, first check whether fibre is included in carbohydrate or declared separately. Identical numbers do not necessarily represent identical exercise fuel without considering that difference and polyols. Units and portions also need to be made comparable.
