Potassium Intake

Minerals & Electrolytes

Potassium Intake is the amount consumed through foods, drinks and supplements over a defined period, distinct from absorption and body stores.

Potatoes, legumes, produce, dairy and some protein foods supply potassium; bananas are not the only source. Food potassium usually arrives within a broader meal, whereas salt substitutes may contain concentrated amounts. Varied eating is a useful foundation for healthy athletes. Kidney disease and potassium-retaining medicines can change the safety of supplements and substitutes and require individual review.

Intestinal potassium absorption is generally efficient, and kidneys provide the main regulated excretion route. Aldosterone, insulin, acid-base status and muscle activity influence distribution or loss, so daily intake is not the sole determinant of blood values. Intense exercise can temporarily shift potassium out of muscle before recovery redistribution. Interpret a post-exercise sample with its timing and clinical context.

Intake, absorption and body status are distinct. An apparently adequate food record can coexist with poor uptake from intestinal disease or medicines, while one low-intake day does not establish clinical deficiency. Interpret repeated food records, longer-term patterns, symptoms and suitable markers together. Fatigue after one training session is not a specific diagnostic test for an individual mineral.
