PDCAAS Reference Table
PDCAAS combines the limiting indispensable-amino-acid score with fecal protein digestibility; state the reference pattern and food preparation.
| Element | Relationship | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Amino-acid score | limiting amino-acid ratio to reference pattern | Use a named age pattern |
| Digestibility correction | amino-acid score x fecal protein digestibility | Use fractions consistently |
| Reporting ceiling | Commonly truncated at 1.0, or 100% | State the reporting convention |
| Limitation | Not the same as ileal amino-acid digestibility | Do not directly mix with DIAAS values |
Protein Digestibility-Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) combines amino-acid composition and protein digestibility in one scoring method. Its reference and reporting convention matter; the result is not independent of food conditions.
PDCAAS corrects the limiting-amino-acid ratio against a reference pattern using faecal protein digestibility. Conventional reporting truncates scores at 1.0 or 100%. This reporting ceiling can obscure differences among sources and does not mean that all protein is absorbed or that 100% becomes muscle tissue after eating.
Scoring commonly expresses amino acids as milligrams per gram of protein and compares them with an age-specific pattern. That differs from a daily requirement in milligrams per kilogram of body mass. Without knowing age group, method and denominator, comparing two quality numbers can be misleading rather than informative.
