Pantothenic Acid (B5) Reference Table
US/Canadian DRI reference for healthy adults age 19-50; the adult pair is male / female. Pregnancy and lactation values are for adults.
| Group or reference | Value | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Adult male / female | 5 / 5 mg/day | RDA unless identified as AI |
| Pregnancy | 6 mg/day | Life-stage reference |
| Lactation | 7 mg/day | Life-stage reference |
| Adult upper limit | No UL established | Adequate intake, not RDA |
Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid) is a water-soluble precursor of coenzyme A, supporting acyl-group transfer and fuel metabolism.
Pantothenic acid supports coenzyme A formation, whose pantetheine region carries acyl groups. This matters in fat and carbohydrate metabolism and synthesis. Oral pantetheine or a CoA label is not equivalent to directly increasing muscle coenzyme supply; digestion, conversion and intracellular regulation mediate between a consumed product and final function rather than allowing unrestricted pathway acceleration.
Pantothenic acid occurs in many foods including meat, eggs, pulses and grains, and isolated deficiency is uncommon in ordinary diets. Severe energy restriction can produce several inadequacies at once; general symptoms are not specific to B5. Restoring dietary variety and addressing restriction is more informative for athletes than selecting one tablet from an anti-fatigue slogan.
