Nutrient Source
Nutrition Fundamentals & Nutrients
Nutrient Source is a food, drink or supplement that supplies a specified nutrient. Merely containing a nutrient differs from being a substantial source. The amount in a realistic portion, its usability and the food's other characteristics determine the source's practical contribution.
Most foods provide several nutrients together. Lentils, for example, contain carbohydrate and fibre as well as protein, while milk can provide protein and calcium. Assigning each food to just one nutrient therefore simplifies its actual composition.
Actual portion size determines how much of a food's components is consumed. If the labelled serving differs from the portion eaten, calculations must be adjusted to the actual amount. Accompanying oils, sauces, and drinks also matter when interpreting a meal.
Milk and a fortified plant drink can be compared as calcium sources using their labels and actual portions; plant drinks do not all have the same composition. Meat and lentils both supply iron, but its form and absorption differ. In a sport diet, the source should fit preferences and the whole meal, not merely carry a nutrient's name.
