Tibia
Skeletal System
The tibia, or shinbone, is the larger, medial bone of the leg, transmitting body weight from the femur to the ankle, and is the second-longest bone in the body after the femur.
Important Landmarks
- Upper end: the medial and lateral condyles with a flat upper surface, the tibial plateau, on which the menisci sit, and the intercondylar eminence, where the cruciate ligaments attach.
- Tibial tuberosity: attachment of the patellar tendon.
- Shaft: with its sharp front edge, the anterior crest, lying directly beneath the skin.
- Lower end: the medial malleolus and the inferior articular surface for the talus.
