Systole
Cardiovascular System
Systole is the contraction phase of the heart muscle in the cardiac cycle, during which blood is ejected from the chambers; the term usually refers to ventricular systole.
The word comes from the Greek systole, meaning “contraction, drawing together”.
Phases of Ventricular Systole
- Isovolumetric contraction: the ventricle contracts with all valves closed; volume is constant and pressure rises rapidly.
- Rapid and reduced ejection: the aortic and pulmonary valves open and the stroke volume is ejected.
