Submucosa
Gastrointestinal System
The submucosa is the second layer of the gut wall, made of dense irregular connective tissue; it binds the mucosa to the muscularis and contains larger blood vessels, lymphatics, and the submucosal (Meissner’s) plexus.
Components
- Blood and lymphatic vessels: nourish the mucosa and carry absorbed substances.
- Meissner’s plexus: controls glandular secretion, local blood flow, and mucosal movements.
- Lymphoid tissue: Peyer’s patches in the ileum, extending from the mucosa into the submucosa.
- Collagen and elastic fibres: give the wall strength and flexibility.
