Stretch-Shortening Cycle (SSC)
Muscular System
The stretch–shortening cycle (SSC) is a movement pattern in which a rapid eccentric contraction (stretch of muscle and tendon) is immediately followed by a concentric contraction, making the concentric force greater than without the preceding stretch.
Three Phases
- Eccentric (loading) phase: muscle–tendon stretch, as when the heel lands in running.
- Amortisation (transition) phase: the time between the end of stretch and the start of shortening; it should be very short.
- Concentric (unloading) phase: shortening and push-off.
