Scar Tissue
Cells and Tissues
Scar tissue is fibrous, collagen-rich connective tissue that replaces the original tissue at the site of injury when that tissue cannot fully regenerate.
Characteristics
- Different structure: collagen in scar is usually less organised than in healthy tissue, and specialised structures such as glands or muscle fibres are absent.
- Less flexibility and strength: scar in muscle and tendon is stiffer and less flexible.
- No specialised function: scar in muscle cannot contract.
