Plasma Volume
Cardiovascular System
Plasma volume is the total amount of the liquid part of the blood, making up about 55 percent of blood volume; in an adult it is about 40–50 millilitres per kilogram (about 3 litres).
Determinants
- Plasma proteins (especially albumin): maintain oncotic pressure and hold water in the vessels.
- Sodium: the most important electrolyte determining extracellular fluid volume.
- Hormones: aldosterone (retains sodium) and ADH (retains water).
