Neurogenesis
Nervous System & Special Senses
Neurogenesis is the process of producing new neurons from neural stem cells; it occurs mainly in the embryonic period, and limited neurogenesis has also been reported in certain brain regions in adults.
Embryonic Neurogenesis
- At its peak, hundreds of thousands of neurons are produced per minute.
- Most cerebral cortex neurons are produced before birth.
Adult Neurogenesis
- Dentate gyrus of the hippocampus: the most important site; new neurons play a part in learning, distinguishing similar memories, and mood regulation.
- Subventricular zone: in rodents, neurons migrate to the olfactory bulb; in humans this route is very limited.
