Keratinocyte
Cells and Tissues
The keratinocyte is the most abundant cell of the epidermis, making up about 90 percent of its cells, and produces the tough protein keratin.
Life Cycle
Keratinocytes are produced in the basal layer of the epidermis by stem cell division; as they move towards the surface, they gradually accumulate more keratin, lose their nucleus and organelles, and finally become the flat, dead cells of the stratum corneum, which are shed.
