Hip Bone (Os Coxae)
Skeletal System
The hip bone (os coxae) is a large, irregular bone on each side of the body, formed by the fusion of three bones: the ilium above, the ischium below and behind, and the pubis in front.
Fusion
In childhood these three bones are separated by a Y-shaped cartilage in the acetabulum and usually fuse completely between 15 and 17 years of age; another name for it is the innominate bone.
