Glycolytic System
Muscular System
The glycolytic system is the metabolic pathway that, in the cytoplasm (sarcoplasm) and without direct need for oxygen, breaks down glucose or glycogen to pyruvate and produces ATP rapidly.
Characteristics
- Yield: 2 ATP per molecule of blood glucose and 3 ATP per glucose unit from glycogen.
- Speed: slower than the phosphagen system but much faster than the aerobic system.
- Time range: the main contributor in intense activities lasting about 10 seconds to 2 minutes.
- Key enzyme: phosphofructokinase (PFK).
