Gastrin
Gastrointestinal System
Gastrin is a peptide hormone secreted mainly by G cells in the stomach’s pyloric antrum (and to some extent the duodenum) that stimulates gastric acid secretion and promotes the growth of the gastric mucosa.
Stimuli for Secretion
- Proteins and amino acids (especially phenylalanine and tryptophan) in the stomach.
- Gastric distension.
- Vagal stimulation (via gastrin-releasing peptide, GRP).
- Calcium and coffee (even decaffeinated).
Inhibitors
- pH below about 3 in the antrum (negative feedback).
- Somatostatin (from D cells).
- Secretin and other intestinal hormones.
