Dendrite

Nervous System & Special Senses

Dendrites are the short, branching projections of a neuron that receive nerve signals from other neurons or from sensory receptors and conduct them toward the cell body.
The word dendrite comes from the Greek dendron, meaning “tree,” and refers to the tree-like shape of these projections.

Structure and Function

A single neuron can have dozens of dendrites, on which thousands of synapses from other neurons are located.
In many brain neurons, the surface of the dendrites is covered with small protrusions called dendritic spines, which are the main sites for receiving excitatory signals.
