Bone Matrix
Skeletal System
Bone matrix is the extracellular material of bone, making up most of its volume and consisting of organic and inorganic components.
Components
- Organic part, or osteoid (about 30 to 35 percent by weight): over 90 percent is type I collagen, and the rest consists of non-collagenous proteins such as osteocalcin, osteopontin, and proteoglycans.
- Mineral part (about 60 to 65 percent by weight): mainly hydroxyapatite crystals of calcium and phosphate, with some magnesium, sodium, and carbonate.
- Water: about 10 percent.
