Basophils
Cardiovascular System
Basophils are the least numerous white blood cells (less than 1 percent), taking part in allergic reactions and inflammation by releasing histamine and heparin.
They are named after the staining of their granules with basic dyes, which makes them appear dark blue-purple.
Characteristics
- Large, dark granules that often obscure the nucleus.
- IgE receptors on their surface; they are activated on contact with an allergen.
- Similarity to mast cells: similar function, but mast cells live in tissues and basophils in the blood.
